"Reading for everyone" - that´s the motto of the Spaß am Lesen Verlag. Since 2009, the publishing house has been publishing books and newspapers in simple, understandable German - especially for young people and adults who cannot read well. Spaß am Lesen Verlag is the oldest and largest publishing house of its kind in Germany.
Our mission
More than 6 million people in Germany have problems with reading and writing. The publisher Spaß am Lesen Verlag has set itself the task of combating this problem, because reading is important! People who can't read well find it difficult to keep up socially and professionally. Reading means education, participation, equal opportunities and, of course, fun - because reading should not be perceived as a barrier. We want to create the broadest possible awareness of the fact that many citizens have reading difficulties. Above all, we want to show that it is possible to do something about it!
With a wide range of simple books and newspapers, Spaß am Lesen Verlag offers help to people who have problems reading and writing. We want to encourage and promote the joy of reading, even for people with low literacy levels.
Our books, newspapers and other services are aimed at as many people as possible. Depending on the level of difficulty, different groups of people can derive particular benefit from our reading and learning programmes. Functionally illiterate people, dyslexics, people with disabilities, dementia or low levels of education as well as refugees, people with a migration background or with concentration difficulties and many more.
Who we work with
The Spaß am Lesen Verlag works with various public and private institutions and organisations. We are not dependent on subsidies. However, any support is of course welcome. This enables us to realise large-scale projects that are sustainable and have a high benefit for society as a whole.
Der Spaß am Lesen Verlag is an official supporter of the Alpha Decade. From 2016 to 2026, Germany wants to make great strides in promoting literacy. In addition, Spaß am Lesen Verlag is a member of the Bundesverband Alphabetisierung und Grundbildung e.V., the Alphanetz NRW, the Bundesverband Leseförderung and is in dialogue with boys & books.
The agency Klar und Deutlich is also part of the Spaß am Lesen Verlag. The agency for plain language makes the communication tools of companies and institutions understandable. It also offers many other services such as "Steffi erklärt's einfach" for barrier-free communication on the Internet, the online language learning programme "soDeutsch" and the realisation of regional book projects in simple language for local authorities, companies and other organisations.
The cooperation between a temporary employers' association, the Federal Association for Literacy and the publisher Spaß am Lesen Verlag is unique in Germany. The aim is to give functionally illiterate people practical prospects through a combination of help, learning and job and qualification programmes.
Our books
With a large selection of books at different reading levels, adults as well as children and young people are encouraged to read. Our selection of literature is wide-ranging and constantly growing: whether crime fiction, fantasy, novels, classics, thrillers, children's books or bilingual works - there is something for everyone!
Our newspapers
In addition to our book selection, Spaß am Lesen Verlag also offers an exciting range of newspapers. The various newspapers offer the opportunity to delve deeper into a subject area. The exciting articles in the issues are both informative and entertaining. The printed newspaper Klar & Deutlich is published monthly. The digital newspaper Einfach & Aktuell offers weekly news and three pages of exercises including a lesson plan. The Einfach & Aktuell Thema digital issues are also published weekly and offer an insight into a new, exciting topic every week. The topic booklets are supplemented by exercises to support reading comprehension.
