Supporting Children in Learning German with Multilingual Books
Teachers and educators often face the challenge of finding a linguistic balance in everyday practice so that they can reach all children without becoming overwhelmed themselves. This can seem particularly challenging in groups where many different native languages are spoken. One proven approach is to read and translate stories from other countries and cultures in their respective languages. In this way, all mother tongues are visibly valued. At the same time, prejudices can be reduced and mutual understanding strengthened. Suitable materials can be a great support in this process. The books published by SchauHoer Verlag are clearly structured and encourage children through their creative and entertaining style to discover stories in more than one language and to develop a love of reading.SchauHoer Verlag, based in Pulheim near Cologne, has been supporting parents, daycare centers and schools since 2006 with multilingual books that help provide children with the best possible educational opportunities—regardless of their native language. The name SchauHoer reflects the publisher’s central idea: to see, to listen and to speak along. The publishing program includes children’s books, teaching materials and music in around thirty languages and now comprises more than 70 publications.
