A project near to our hearts
Many languages are spoken around the world: Different languages of origin
are a resource that we want to make greater use of to encourage more people
to read aloud and promote language acquisition.
- Around 40 percent of all children under the age of five have a migration
background (Microcensus 2020)
- In over 1.3 million households with children under the age of 18, a language
other than German is predominantly spoken (Microcensus 2020)
- 32,3 percent of one- to eight-year-old children in Germany are rarely or
never read to at home (Vorlesemonitor 2024)
In cooperation with children's book publishers, we have translated popular
books for 2- to 7-year-olds into several languages, including Arabic, Farsi,
Polish, Romanian, Russian, Turkish and Ukrainian.
Daycare centers and libraries are an important part of providing important
impulses for language and reading education among children and their legal
guardians. They can take the books home with them to get them read to
them: In this way, stories already known through the daycare center and
topics relevant to everyday life can move into the family languages at home.
