Education saves lives – raising awareness about stem cell donation in schools and companies with the Deutsche Stammzellspenderdatei (DSD)
The Deutsche Stammzellspenderdatei (DSD) gGmbH is a non-profit organization based in Dessau-Roßlau, Saxony-Anhalt. For over 30 years, it has pursued a clear goal: to give people with life-threatening blood diseases a second chance at life. The core tasks of the DSD include recruiting, supporting, and accompanying volunteer stem cell donors, as well as maintaining and updating the donor registry in close cooperation with the German Bone Marrow Donor Center (Zentralen Knochenmarkspender-Register Deutschland - ZKRD).
Since its foundation in 1992, the DSD has already arranged almost 3,000 actual stem cell donations. Each one of these represents hope, solidarity, and a real chance of recovery – for patients worldwide.

Nationwide school partnerships

A particular focus of the organization's work is the nationwide school project “Education that saves lives.” With age-appropriate, exciting lessons, the DSD brings the topic of stem cell donation directly into schools. Students learn what stem cells are, how a stem cell transplant works, and how easy it is to become a potential lifesaver themselves. The workshops can be flexibly integrated into subjects such as biology, ethics, religion, or social studies—even across subjects—and are individually coordinated with teachers.

Social engagement in companies

In addition, the DSD informs company employees on site and conducts registration campaigns there. In this way, companies assume social responsibility and make their social engagement visible. Through school partnerships and corporate collaborations, the DSD promotes sustainable education and continuously reaches new generations.
This offering is supplemented by registration campaigns at trade fairs, events, and sporting events—anywhere where people can be inspired to become stem cell donors. Registration as a stem cell donor is open to people aged 17 to 50.
